Georgetown : President Donald Ramotar has reaffirmed his government’s commitment towards democracy and good governance as he announced that Monday, November 10, 2014 will be the date of the first post-recess sitting.
He also stated that if the Opposition advances its No-confidence motion, he will respond by exercising his Constitutional options to “either prorogue or dissolve Parliament paving the way for holding of General Elections”.
In an address to the nation last evening, the president said, “There are those who want to divide Guyana and take us back into the past, but the future belongs to all of us, and that future we are building every day, together”.
There are other matters before the National Assembly, he added, that hold the key to Guyana’s future, including the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Legislation, Telecommunications Legislation, Education Bill and Financial Papers providing for expenditure of Public Funds for development projects.
President Ramotar also indicated that he has been advised that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will require six months to prepare for Local Government Elections under the new local government electoral system.
He further announced his intention to hold Local Government Elections in the Second Quarter of 2015, pending further consultations with GECOM on its preparations.
The Head of State revealed that he disclosed his intentions, on the assumption that the post recess sittings of the National Assembly would proceed uninterruptedly, deliberating on the urgent matters listed in the interest of the people of Guyana.
He said that the country deserved better than political games, “that serve to only benefit a select few while damaging the welfare of the people of Guyana”. He added that his government remains committed to forging partnership and taking appropriate actions in the interest of stability, unity and prosperity.
