Limited LIAT service in Grenada

St John’s Antigua : Regional airline LIAT has been reinstating flights one day after protest action shut down its operations in Grenada.

The company said earlier that it had managed to get flights 771 -Barbados to Grenada and 772 – Trinidad to Grenada operating as scheduled.

LIAT’s latest release says Flight 704 – Trinidad to Grenada to Barbados will now fly as scheduled tomorrow.

The company says it’s not certain what will happen tomorrow with flights 771 and 772, and is urging passengers to monitor media outlets.

Workers in Grenada are pressing for outstanding wages from the cash-strapped carrier, which expects to continue seeing cancellations into tomorrow.

The workers, represented by the Technical and Allied Workers Union (TAWU), claim they are owed over five million dollars for overtime and meal allowances dating back to 1983.

Shareholder governments: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica, have already indicated that they are not willing to make any other offer than what has been outlined by Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer.

Spencer had suggested an offer of 8 hundred thousand dollars last December, following industrial action by LIAT staff.

TAWU President General Chester Humphrey said he was very disappointed with LIAT’s position adding, “its non-revised position speaks of contempt for its employees and their union”.

n a statement, LIAT said management is seeking a speedy resolution to this matter and apologised to affected passengers.

Passengers who wish to re-book their flights would be allowed to do so without charge for a period of one week from the date of their scheduled travel.
