Georgetown: The inaugural Leguan Night was launched at the Tourism Ministry, today, with the Planning Committee promising an event like none the island has witnessed before.
During the launching activity, Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh lauded the organizers for their vision and steadfast efforts to ensure that the activity will be staged successfully, come November 9th, 2013 at the Greens Park Ground, Blenheim.
He reminded that the Ministry of Tourism continues to support Community Based Activities with the intention of creating sustainable events that will benefit the communities economically.
The event is expected to attract thousands even though it is the first such activity on the small island, and the planning committee promises a host of cultural attractions, including a pageant, beach activity, island tours and opportunities for camping.
“We continue in our efforts to promote domestic tourism and afford all Guyanese the opportunity to see their country and experience the various cultural nuances that define each community,” Haralsingh emphasized.
Meanwhile, all nine delegates competing for the title of Miss Leguan 2013 , were present and used the opportunity to proudly announce their platforms, ranging from Pollution, Peer Pressure, Domestic Violence, Teenage Pregnancy, Juvenile Delinquency, Women Empowerment, Rights of the Child, Child Abuse, to Unemployment in Leguan.
On this note, Haralsingh reminded patrons that they will be treated to much more than a cultural event but will have a chance to glimpse the intelligence component of the pageant.
The Organizing Committee has secured sponsorships from Banks DIH and Gizmos and Gadgets, Shoe Haven has also confirmed their participation and the Shakti Strings Orchestra will be on hand to satisfy everyone’s musical needs.
Food and drinks would be on sale at Greens Park Ground, and there would be other attractions. Some residents, for instance, would be showcasing products made in Leguan.
Leguan Night would consist of a series of events, commencing with activities at the beach and culminating in the evening with a pageant. The activities on the beach will include volleyball, cricket, other games; Tickets for admission of adults will cost $500, and children would be admitted for $200.
Another highlight of the event will be the island tours which will showcase the rich cultural facets of the island, including the St. Peter’s Anglican Church which has been in existence since 1855.
