A senior member of the Royal Barbados Police Force has suggested that new pogrammes must be put in place to combat the high use of marijuana on the island.  Head of the Drug Squad Superintendent Grafton  Philips. told Trakker News the current programmes are not working and they should be reviewed.

"It might be a case where where the programmes and systems were not designed for our culture because they were in place for sometime and we still we have a high consumption level of marijuana in Barbados", says Phillips.

He noted the figures shows that the seizures made by the Drug Squad have been on the increase over the years.

"Currently the year is not half yet and we are ahead in terms of seizures. Last year, 21,030 plants were seized. So far for this year 12,334 plants were seized". Phillips said.

According to the figures, the Drug Squad also seized 4587, 476 kilogrammes of cannabis and 19.426 kilos of cocaine in 2012. So far this year, 3025.826 kilogrammes of cannabis and 30.49 kilos of cocaine have been seized.

"This is an indication that the programmes that are being pushed are not getting throught to the general commumity including the youth. I stress youth but it is not only them that are using drugs. It is also the general commumity", he added.
