The number of children with severe behavioural problems at Children Homes in Barbados are on the increase, says Senior Child Care Officer with the Child Care Board Delvina Waithe.
According to Waithe, adolescents who are in the 13 to 15 age group were coming into the homes already involved with gangs, more defiant, disobedient, angrier, aggressive and in some cases suffering from psychiatric disorders.
Waithe said the children are presented challenges for the attendants at the Children Homes, who before would primary would have had to deal with children who were obedient and would do what they what they are told.
"We have to train our staff first of all to recognize the behaviours associated with these conditions and then give them the tools to deal with them, if not the children and staff are frustrated ", Waithe said.
