A fire which started around midday yestrday at a metal dump at Cane Garden, St Thomas, turned into a raging inferno pumping thick black smoke far and wide posing problems for the surrounding area was contained by fire officials late last
Members of the Barbados Fire Service, the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Disaster Emergency Management department (DEM) rushed to a scene of billowing smoke and arching flames.
Small explosions became the norm at the site, as thousands of rubberized tyres caught fire throughout the day. The heavy smoke darking the sky could be seen all the island from Christ Church in the south, to St Lucy in the north.
Officials clear the area as a precaution of civilians because they did not know the nature of the chemical that were burning.
