Georgetown: Air Services Limited (ASL) Operations Manager Annette Arjoon told the press yesterday that more needs to be done to improve the integrity of some of the domestic airstrips. She said, “Mabaruma, Kaituma, Matthews Ridge, Lethem, Kaieteur and Mahdia have the best airstrips in the country.” She was, however, quick to point out that there are equally those that are way below acceptable standards and “Kaikan, Baramita and Eteringbang are among the worse”. This concern comes in wake of an accident yesterday at Port Kaituma as a Trans Guyana aircraft clipped the wing of another as it was about to take off. There were no major injuries or damage, but flights were grounded for hours.
Six to eight flights come out of the airport on a daily basis, with some 70 persons, mostly miners, being the main passengers. There are demands that the airstrip undergo major upgrade. Trans Guyana and Air Services Limited are said to be the main carriers operating at the airport.
Several flights have encountered landing troubles on local airstrips. Two domestic flight carriers had indicated that work needs to be done on those airstrips that have not met the minimum standards for aircraft to land.
