Georgetown: As the rest of the world commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2013. Guyana will join with activities held at the Guyana International Conference Center (GICC), Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing said progress continues inexorably, as the State exerts considerable political will in championing the cause of women and gender equality.
Government has passed several pieces of legislation to protect women and girls. The most notable are: the Domestic Violence Act, the Sexual Offences Act. It has also established the Women and Gender Equality Commission.
“Domestically and internationally, the achievements of Guyanese women are chronicled in the world of gender. Cabinet joins with progressive forces in the world in celebrating 2013 International Women’s Day,” the HPS said.
Guyana has made significant strides towards ensuring an environment which allows the co-existence of men and women in the workforce and today women hold important offices such as ministers of government, parliamentarians, and permanent secretaries, and they work along with men in developing policies for the further advancement of Guyana.
