Georgetown: At the observance ceremony hosted by the High Commission of India to Guyana to observe ITEC Day on Tuesday, Auditor General, Deodat Sharma noted that the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme has served numerous employees in the field of auditing.
He added that the ITEC Programme which is an innovative form of technical cooperation from the Indian Government has benefitted Guyana’s Audit Office where 71 employees were selected and trained in advanced audit practices.
“The ITEC Programme has trained our staff in areas that are considered new and emergent, such as auditing in Information Technology, Environment, auditing of the energy sector and auditing E-Governance,” Sharma said.
General Manager of the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), Francis Simmons reminded that Government of India has provided a $144M grant that has realised the establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Information Technology, commissioned last year at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus.
The centre’s mandate is to provide training to bridge the gap between the public and private sector and enable several employees in the public sector in retraining and constant upgrading to skills.
According to Simmons, a complement of staff from India arrived just over a week ago to take up their posts at the centre; while local persons have been selected to take part in the Master Training Courses in India this year.
Upon the trainees’ return, public servants can and will be trained in the more exceptional arts and more practical aspects of Information Technology at the centre.
“India’s contribution to the higher education of Guyanese citizens overtime has not gone unnoticed. As we continue to develop this beautiful country of ours, we look forward to the continued relationship with the Government of India as we strive for the development of the people of Guyana and communities, across all socioeconomic strata,” Simmons said.
The High Commission of India to Guyana first launched ITEC on September 15, 1964. This was done with technical and economic cooperation of more than 140 partnering countries and with the aim of enhancing the skills of auditors.
