Georgetown: Delon Henry, called ‘Nasty Man,’ who was charged for the murder of a ‘Back Circle’ footballer, Dexter Griffith on September 29, 2015 was found guilty on Thursday when a mixed 12- member jury panel returned with a unanimous verdict before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Georgetown High Court.
Before the guilty verdict, the jury was deadlocked six-six but, Justice Kissoon inquired from the panel whether he could assist them with further directions to help them to arrive at a verdict.
In response, the foreperson detailed the difficulty that members of the panel had with certain aspects of the evidence presented in the trial. The Judge obliged the jurors on the questions asked and the jurors retired for a second time to deliberate.
This time, the panel took less than an hour to return with a guilty verdict.
After the announcement, defence attorney, Adrian Thompson, who was not in court but was represented by attorney John Linder, requested that a probation report be prepared for the accused who was then remanded to prison.
The probation report followed by sentencing would take place on July 5, 2018 at 15:00hrs before Justice Sandil Kissoon.
When asked if he had anything to say, Henry said that he was locked up for the alleged murder he did not commit and the police placed evidence against him stating that his picture was leaked by cops and the ‘system’ was so designed to pin the murder on him.
He told the court that the star witness, brother of the deceased Keshawn Griffith doesn’t know him and common sense would prevail since he did not know the area ‘Warlock’ having being in prison from age 14 to 23 years old, he doesn’t know Georgetown.
Henry said, “I gon wear all ova white and go and shoot somebody. I spent nine months in jail and I did not shoot anybody.”
A post mortem report presented by Dr. Nehaul Singh said Griffith died from shock and haemorrhage due to multiple gunshot wounds.
Griffith was shot six times to the body and was left for dead in a gutter he fell into after receiving injuries.
The state case was led by Lisa Cave and Orinthia Schmidt.
In presenting the state’s case, Lisa Cave told the court that on the day in question the accused shot and murdered the deceased Dexter Griffith at ‘Warlock’ area.
Detailing the lineup of the identification parade, State witness, Police Corporal Munilall Persaud recalled that Henry was cautioned by ASP Reid, who had informed him that he was identified as a suspect. During cross-examination by counsel for the murder accused, it was put to Corporal Persaud that Henry did not tell ASP Reid he had “no problem” with the identification parade.
In fact, the counsel suggested to the witness that his client had only told police that his photograph was published, the day (on October 5, 2015) prior to the identification parade, in the newspapers in which he was labelled a suspect.
