Justice Carmona appointed to International Criminal Court

Port-of-Spain: High Court Judge Anthony Carmona has been elected to serve as a judge of the International Criminal Court.

Justice Carmona who is currently hearing the trial of the murder of Amy Annamunthodo was elected by the Assembly of States of the ICC which comprises 119 countries.

He was elected on the first ballot and got the requisite two thirds vote.

Justice Carmona's history with the ICC dates back to the 1980's when he was adviser to former Prime Minister Arthur NR Robinson in the formulation of the ICC.

He's also worked in the Office of the Prosecution of the ICC for two years and was involved in some high profile cases including the trials of former Yugoslav politicians.

He also served on the Appeals Council for cases involving the genocide in Rwanda.

Justice Carmona has worked in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and acted as DPP on occasion.

The only other local attorney to sit on the ICC is Queen's Counsel Karl Hudson-Phillips.
