Georgetown -The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs wishes to reject claims made by the Kaieteur News Article “Hinterland students in food poisoning scare” which appeared on page 16 of the Kaieteur News, dated Tuesday, March 08, 2011.
The Ministry has noted with great discontent, the unethical reporting and coverage given to the article by the Kaieteur News and would like to clarify the inaccuracies surrounding the matter.
Firstly, Kaieteur News turned up at the Hinterland Students’ Dormitory enquiry of students feeling unwell and was advised by the Administrator to speak to the Permanent Secretary located at the Ministry’s head office, instead; and as an accustomed practice by the newspaper, they decided to publish the inaccurate article without making any contact with the Ministry’s Head office. This shows the glaring truth of Kaieteur News’ agenda – to create confusion and mistrust in society.
Secondly, there is no septic tank leakage at the dormitory as was reported by the newspaper. The Ministry wishes to clearly state that all the facilities at the dormitory are operating efficiently and regular housekeeping and maintenance are done.
Further, it is highly unacceptable that Kaieteur News would publish that the food poisoning was due to expired canned foods that were prepared in the kitchen. This piece of information was quoted as ‘sources’ saying. The purchasing and preparation of food for the students are done under stringent monitoring to ensure that the health and well being of the students at the dormitory are guaranteed. Food stuffs are procured on a monthly basis for the consumption.
While there was a reported incident of students feeling unwell on Sunday evening, nine students were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and not fifteen as was reported by Kaieteur News. At the hospital, officials from the Ministry including the Permanent Secretary were there to assist the students and to ensure that they are comfortable.
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs would therefore urge the Kaieteur News to desist from misguiding the public.
