President Bharrat Jagdeo has approved the declaration of the Kanuku Mountain area, Region Nine and Shell Beach, Region One, as protected areas.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon at a post-Cabinet media briefing at the Office of the President said that these two areas now join the existing protected areas, while investigations are ongoing by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and regional communities to include other areas within the national scheme of protected areas.
The HPS explained that protected areas legislation, which was passed in the late stages of the Ninth parliament, provides for the creation of a protected areas commission which will be centrally located and be responsible for implementing the provisions of the Act.
It also provides for local administrative bodies, which are responsible for administering and executing the management plans in areas that have been declared protective areas.
