Kidney disease in Barbados is on the rise,the Queen Elizabeth Hospital(QEH) is spending $6.5 million annually providing dialysis treatment to patients suffering from the chronic illness.
The QEH currently spends $1.5 million each year to provide treatment for 24 dialyis patients who are treated at a private insitution. In addition, it has lease and rental arrangement for 23 dialsis machinesat a cost of $1.8 millon each year. Last year, 200 kidney patients were treated at the QEH.
Vice president of the Barbados Kidney Association Theophilus Norville, told Trakker News while he believed some Barbadains were taking heed of the healthier lifestyle most of them were not listening.
