Landslide victory for NNP in Grenada

St George's, Grenada.

The New National Party (NNP) led by  Opposition Leader Dr Keith Mitchell has won all 15 seats in the General Election held in the Spice Isle yesterday.

Prime Minister Tillman Thomas and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) were swept out of office four years after and a half years after they had won the polls by an 11 to 4 margin.

The NNP repeated the party's performance in 1999 general elections when it captured all the seats in Parliament.

"I have accepted the awesome responsibility that you have placed on my shoulders. This is not a Keith Mitchell's victory, it is your victory"; he told cheering supporters, who had gathered at the Tanteen playing ground on the outskirts of St George's to celebrate the victory.

Mitchell told supporters that they should not seek to shun members of the NDC, urging them not to look down on those who had been defeated.

According to Mitchell, he wanted his legacy of 38 years in public life to be that he had tried his best to unite the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The results was a bitter blow for for Thomas and the NDC that sought to portray itself as a united party following the the infighting that led to the dismissal of of several senior cabinet ministers.

Mitchell, 65,  will be sworn in as Prime Minister today.
