Port-of-Spain: Last ditch efforts have ensured that there will be the Calypso Monarch competition at the Dimanche Gras Show taking place this evening.
Negotiations between the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) and some sponsors have seen the prize money of $500,000 increasing to $1 million.
Calypsonians had threatened to boycott the show because the prize money was much lower than other major competitions.
The first prize in 2011 was $2 million prize.
TUCO president, Lutalo "Brother Resistance" Masimba says the event is the most prestigous in Carnival.
He says TUCO is still encountering many challenges, adding that for 2013 TUCO must look above the $1 million prize.
Twelve calypsonians will compete tonight.
