St Johns, Antigua.
The Government of Antigua have informed civil servants that their salaries for March will not be paid until after the Easter weekend.
Minister of Finance Harold Lovell made the disclosure yesterday during a meeting with public sector unions.
President of the Antigua & Barbuda Union of Teachers (AB&UT), Vernest Mack told the media that a commitment was made that public servants would be paid by April 5.
“They explained the government’s position and it was said that all salaries should be paid by that date,” Mack said. She noted that despite the announcement the union appreciates the early notice.
Earlier this month, teachers led week-long strike after salaries were more that two weeks over due. The action forced the early dismissal of several schools on the island.
The strike led to a meeting with unions, the Minance minister and the Account General, where it was agreed that all relevant stakeholders would be updated on the status of salaries on a monthly basis.
