Lawyer stands bail for client

Bridgetown.

Lawyer Andrew Pilgrim withdrew from representing Keisha Alica Brathwaite in the District A Magistrates' Court yesterday so he could stand bail for her.

Brathwaite, 21, of Midway Lane, Pineland, St Michael, was charged with unlawfully entering and trespassing the premises of the National Housing Corporation(NHC) at Barbarees Gardens, St Michael on November 24.

She pleaded guilty and was granted $5000 bail while her sentence was suspended consultation with the Probation Department.

Pilgrim upon realizing that no one was present to stand bailfor the first time offender, left the Bar table, walked into the dock, took oath and disclosed some of his assets, which would be used as a form of surety if Brathwaite does not return to court on January 31.

Brathwaite, 21,  whose is pregnant and is the mother of two boys ages four and three, told the court she regretted taking up residence in the vacant NCH unit.

"I know I was wrong and i am sorry but I did it for my children". she said, adding that that one of her sons was asthmatic and had a heart problem.

Pilgrim who is also the president of the Bar Assciation, informed the court  that Brathwaite had been unceremoniously removed from her previous home by the man for whom she is pregnant, who had thrown her clothing into the road.

As a result,  she and her children had walked the streets through the rain looking for shelter and upon turning the lock at one of the Barbarees Garden  houses  and finding empty, took the opportunity to reside there with her children.

Magistrate Bannister told the court it was a sad case, he added he was inclined to give Brathwaite a community service sentence because of her dire financial situation.
