Georgetown: Considered as one of the best legal minds in the Region, Former Attorney General Doodnauth Singh at the time of his death, was 80-years-old.
The Senior Counsel (SC) was admitted to a private city hospital earlier this week, before passing away around 19:00hrs last evening. He had been ill for a number of years now.
He resigned from the Attorney General position in 2009, and one month later sued the Government for his gratuity.
He served as Attorney General between 2001 and 2009. Born in 1933, Singh was admitted to the Bar in 1959.
Leader of the Alliance For Change party, Khemraj Ramjattan had very fond memories of the man he considered one of his mentors.
Member of Parliament for A Partnership For National Unity Joe Harmon said the Senior Counsel had also impacted his life and career.
Harmon said that he believed that GECOM’s work had taken a toll on Singh, who never recovered his health fully after the troubled 1997 elections, which ended in street protests and a court case.
Meanwhile, President Donald Ramotar in a statement said he is extremely saddened by the passing of Singh. He describes Singh as a man of high intellect, having amassed great experience during his legal life, both locally and internationally.
The President said Singh served Guyana with distinction, pride and selflessness.
Singh was the Special Prosecutor in Grenada against Bernard Coard and others for the murder of the former Grenadian Prime Minister Maurice Bishop.
His final act as Minister of Legal Affairs was to successfully pilot an amendment to the Constitution of Guyana establishing a Parliamentary Oversight Committee which will examine the affairs of the Disciplined Forces.
