Legendary cultural icon Pat Bishop dies

Port-of-Spain: Legendary musician, artist and holder of this country's highest award, Pat Bishop, 71, died today while attending a meeting at the Ministry of Planning and the Economy to decide the way forward on cultural issues.

Bishop collapsed around 5.20 pm during the meeting of the High Level Panel to Guide Arts and Entrepreneural Projects which was chaired by the Planning and Economy Minister Dr Bhoe Tewarie.

She was rushed to the emergency facility at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital accompanied by Dr Tewarie and other members of the panel where she passed away.

A statement from the Planning and Economy Ministry says she was preliminarily diagnosed with a stroke and heart attack. Minister Tewarie says that when he got to the hospital with her, doctors were attempting to revive Bishop but this was in vain.

Bishop, the musical director of the Lydian Singers, has spent her life as an artist and as an activist in the creative community.

Her outspoken independent nature and creative traits gave her the title as one of the most versatile Caribbean women.

Her expert training and guidance led the Lydians to numerous victories under her tenure. In 1994 she received the Trinity Cross, Trinidad and Tobago's highest national award, for her contribution to the field of art and community service.

The Planning Ministry in its statement said all members of the panel, the Ministry and the Government mourn the passing of a cultural pioneer and leader.
