Legislators says no money to spend

British Virgin Islands: The first two legislators of the 2012 budget debate made it clear that Government is not a bottomless treasure chest with unlimited money to spend, the BVInews.com reported.

Representative Archibald Christian stressed that now is the time for the people of the territory to economise and Government to do likewise. He stated that the notion that Government has an abundance of money is untrue, the BVInews.com said.

“There are a lot of expectations out there that Government has a lot of money and truth be told we don’t have as much …. We have to change our spending habits and be sure we are not paying two or three times for contracts… People charged with scrutinizing contracts must ensure we have value for money… We must change our ways,” Christian said.

“The Government has a little bit of money and we have to prioritize how we spend that little bit of money. We are asking the public to be patient with us while we do what we can with the little that we have,” he added.

Christian also appealed for citizens to make adjustment as well and change excessive spending habit and prioritise so that they get value for money.

The BVInews.com stated that Deputy Premier, Dr. Kedrick Pickering, said he needed to make the point clear that the funds were not there for unlimited and loose spending.

“The days when people could have gotten petty contracts, those days are over…We have to look at things completely different. The Government does not have money to spend, spend…just don’t have enough money to spend, spend. We have to be careful how we spend…whether we call it belt-tightening…” Pickering said.
