Georgetown : The National Assembly last evening approved a motion put forth by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds on behalf of the Government, to have the parliament extend its regular sitting beyond its August 10 deadline for going into recess, to September 27, but not after a rigorous debate by the Opposition who declined to support the motion.
This move came to ensure that pending bills are passed into law before the Ninth Parliament, goes into recess.
Prime Minister Hinds said, Government did not take the pronouncement lightly, since the Ninth Parliament has been a demanding one which saw a record number of bills being debated and passed into Law.
Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform, Robert Corbin while rejecting the motion, said that meaningful consultation should have been held to state reasons for extension of sittings. The Alliance for Change also supported the PNC/R’s point.
