Two Hundred unionised technicial employees of telecommunication company, LIME Jamaica are on strike.
The workers went on strike yesterday afternoon after LIME's management failed to attend a second scheduled meeting with union leaders and Labour Ministry officials over issues involving planned staff cuts.
In a stock-market filing yesterday, LIME confirmed that the services of 305 members of its support and delivery teams will be terminated next month as a result of the outsourcing of some of its operations to international firm Ericsson.
Unions representing the workers have disputed the move and accused the company of breaching a 2011 Memorandum of Understanding that stipulated no staff cuts.
Vice-president of the University and Allied Workers Union, Garfield Harvey says claims by LIME in a letter to the Labour ministry that it’s not aware of a dispute are dishonest as he had written to the company about the matter.
Harvey says the matter may now proceed to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal.
