Linden Synthetic Track progressing

Georgetown: Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton has expressed his satisfaction with ongoing works at the construction of the Linden Synthetic Track.

During a visit to the site on April 5, Minister Norton, along with a technical team inspected the work, which is currently at the third phase. This stage involves groundwork, laying of necessary drainage pipes, curb work, asphalting and concreting where necessary. The minister said he is “hyped about what is in store for Linden” upon the completion of the track.

This inspection followed another at a similar facility in New Amsterdam, earlier in the week.

The minister was particularly impressed with the construction, at Linden.

“I know that we are not so close to finishing, but we have moved along quite a way from when we started, I am impressed… we are meeting our deadlines.”

Not only was he satisfied with the transformation of the Bayroc Community Centre Ground where the track is currently being laid, but also with the quality of work being carried out.

So far, there have been no hiccups reported, and the contractors and workers are confident that they will meet the deadline.

Minister Norton noted that Region 10 has always positively contributed to sporting development in Guyana and the athletes have always represented Guyana well at international competitions.

“Region 10 has been the foundation of sports and particularly track and field in Guyana without a synthetic track. Now that we are going to have the state-of-the-art track right here, I am expecting much more.”

He spoke particularly of the athletes that will be participating in the junior CARIFTA games in 2020.

Minister Norton encouraged the residents of the surrounding communities to take pride in the facility and to also ensure the contractors deliver the highest quality work since the track will contribute to the improved aesthetics of the community.

Builders Hardware and General Supplies are constructing the $179M Linden Synthetic Track. It will also have the necessary amenities for all field events. The area at the centre of the track will be developed into a world-class football field. Phase four includes the laying of the synthetic material of an eight-lane 400-metre track. The development of the pavilion and the additional space surrounding is a project that will be scheduled for a later date.

The project is expected to be completed at the end of the year.
