A high level Joint Services Delegation yesterday visited the mining town of Linden.
The team comprised Colonel Bruce Lovell of the Guyana Defence Force, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gavin Primo, who has since assumed command of the division as well as Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle.
Linden has been staging massive daily protests since three persons were killed and scores injured when police opened fire on the crowd Wednesday last.
The killing of the three Lindeners has since radically transformed the objectives of the initial protest action.
Added to the list of demands is for murder charges to be laid against the Police Commander on the scene at the time of the shooting.
The Lindeners have now also called for the removal of the Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and the National Security Minister Clement Rohee.
The Residents of the Region have been maintaining a heavy presence on the roads and have effectively blockaded the critical artery to the interior.
The protest had started out in opposition to an increased electricity tariff, for which the town is adamant it cannot afford to pay.
“It’s not that we are unwilling to pay, it is that we are unable to pay,” reminded the Regional Chairman, Sharma Solomon as he addressed two massive meetings attended by literally thousands on Saturday evening.
Lindeners, through its Regional Chairman Solomon, say that the protest action will continue until their demands are met.
The community says that the issue of the electricity tariff is now off the table and it’s removal is non-negotiable.
