Lions fighting against obesity

Bridgetown.

The Lions Club of Barbados is investing S1.3 million to assit in the fight against obesity among children in Barbados.

Recently,  the charitable organisation launched the Barbados Lions Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Diabetes and Obesity in School Children at the St Michael School.

According to Dr Carlisle Goodard, chairman of the Lion Club, the service club was embarking  on a three year pilot that involved  school across the island. The programme would focus on the third and fourth forms in the primary schools and students in the first and second forms in the secondary schools.

He said the study will examine the practises of children and adolescents ranging from ages 8 to 13 randomly selected primary and secondary schools and would impact on 8 secondary schools, 10 public primary schools, 100 school vendors, 400 teachers, 400  volunteers, 5000 students and 15000 parents.
