Georgetown : Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Ganga Persaud expressed his disappointment over recent statements made by the Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green in the media in which he sought to blame the Ministry for the state of the City.
Green it is reported attributed the ‘inhumane’ conditions of the City to the hours of operation at the landfill site at Haags Bosch, aback of Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
Minister Persaud today said that the change in the schedule of hours from 07:00h to 16:00h to 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs at the Haags Bosch landfill was jointly agreed by himself and the Mayor.
“When I came to the Ministry as Minister… we saw the need to engage his worship the Mayor and his deputy…one of the issues raised then … was the opening hours of the landfill site at Haags Bosch… We all agreed to the proposal and that proposal was implemented after the discussion with the landfill site operator,” Minister Persaud said.
He added that he was surprised that the Mayor would not have responded to the changing dynamics in society and concentrate on sharing the facts with the citizens and residents within the municipality of Georgetown.
“The Mayor’s statement, I am told, was one where the Minister did nothing and that is so unfair and grossly incorrect because we adjusted the opening and closing hours based on the agreement that we all had in the presence of the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor,” Minister Persaud said.
He added that if the Mayor requests an adjustment to the present hours of operations at the landfill site, the Mayor should bear the cost of such adjustments.
“The council does not pay at all… they do not contribute anything to the management of the landfill site although they should have, for over the past three years tipping fees should have been paid to the council but they don’t pay anything and so the Government has to bear the cost, so we need justification in spending tax payers dollars,” Minister Persaud explained.
