Georgetown: The Ministry of Housing and Water and its Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) will be taking strong actions against perpetrators who are manufacturing bogus documents for house lots, and against those who participate by receiving them on behalf of the Ministry.
Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali said that the ministry will not hesitate to prosecute such persons once found guilty.
Over the past year, several scams have been discovered by the Ministry, all of which are currently engaging the attention of its investigation unit.
Minister Ali said that the negligence of persons to adhere to notices and public advisories on the issue of fraudsters who would pose as Housing Ministry’s staff, offering and promising house lots when they are in no way connected with the ministry has caused persons to become victims.
“We want to make it categorically clear that those persons who are party to these frauds continue to be a problem for us because they are not heeding our advice,” Ministry Ali highlighted. He said persons who are party to the fraud are equally culpable.
Minister Ali made reference to a fraudster operating under the name “Satesh” who has issued more than five letters, collected $250,000 each for house lots in an area that is not under development by CHPA. The Ministry is currently working in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to ensure this person is captured.
The Ministry is advising the general public desist from entering into transactions which do not emanate from its offices. Persons are also reminded that CHPA is the only authorised agency for the allocation and receipts of payments in respect of house lots purchased from the authority, and no one is authorised to collect monies on behalf of the agency.
