Georgetown : The Guyana Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha opened a Kalyan Centre and Shopping Plaza at Lamaha Street, Georgetown.
The Centre will host a number of cultural, social and religious activities. In order to ensure the continued existence of the organization and for it to be self sufficient, generate income, to carry out activities to sustain Hinduism, and to address social ills; parts of the centre were transformed into a shopping centre and rented out as various outlets.
There are 21 outlets to be used for food, clothing and craft sale.
Prime Minister Hindsperforming the duties of President expressed the hope that the building will continue to be a place where the Hindu religion, the practices and the rituals can be maintained and also a place where these will be presented to any Guyanese who may wish to learn and be consoled and comforted by it.
Culture Minister Dr. Frank Anthony said he was very pleased that the organization has thought of utilizing the first and second flats of the building for commercial activities and that in so doing it is creating employment by the small businesses being involved. He said it is a very wise move to transform parts of it in order to generate income. He congratulated the organization and all those who were directly involved in making the centre a reality.
