Man who hacked wife to death pleads guilty to manslaughter

Georgetown: A 44-year-old man who hacked his wife Candacy Pitt called “Cindy” to death at the Bygeval Secondary School, Mahaica East Coast Demerara, where she had worked as a security guard, plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter on Monday before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow.

The accused, Athlone Pitt called Buddy, formerly of Chelsea Park, Mahaica, East Coast Demera confessed that on June 1, 2016 he unlawfully killed his wife. He will be sentenced on October 23.

According to reports, Athlone and Candacy were married for over 13 years and lived together at Chelsea Park, Mahaica. It was reported that Athlone was abusive and was jealous of his wife.

Because Athlone was unemployed, his wife began working as a security guard at Bygeval Secondary School to maintain the family.

On June 1, 2016, Athlone attacked his wife at her workplace and dealt her multiple chops about her body.

The woman was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said that the suspect, Athlone Pitt had surrendered and confessed to the crime.

Candacy had ignored her husband and got a job with the Safeway Security Service approximately six weeks before she was killed.

He had chosen not to work and survived on remittances from relatives overseas. The woman’s relatives added that he had threatened to kill her on multiple occasions but she never reported it.
