MARAD now has internationally trained hydrographic surveyor

unnamedGeorgetown : (Maritime Administration Department with adaptations) MARAD’s Hydrographic Surveyor, Darrell Fraser, age 22 years, returned to Guyana in December after successfully completing a six-month training in ‘Hydrography For Charting and Disaster Management’ (Internationally Accredited Category B) in Kyushi Islands, Japan.

The training was fully sponsored by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Co-operation Agency’s (JICA) International Co-operation Programme, in collaboration with the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

The programme attracted participants from seven other countries; namely the Ivory Coast, Egypt, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Tonga, and Vietnam.

The primary function of the training was to empower the participants with the competence to conduct hydrographic surveys to international standards and specifications as promulgated by the IMO and the IHO.

They were exposed to extensive field and classroom studies, including basic Japanese language. Thus they are now well equipped with the knowledge of operating and managing hydrographic surveying equipment, and also to analyse nautical charts. The trainers were from the Japan Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department.

Mr. Fraser joined MARAD in 2014 and is a graduate of the land surveying programme of the Government Technical Institute (GTI). He is now only the second person in this country to be accredited as a Category B Hydrographic Surveyor.
