Mark Young jailed for minibus theft

Berbice : Mark Lee Young, called Toney, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment after admitting that he stole a minibus on February 3, with the help of an armed gang on the Number 19 Public Road, Berbice.
The punishment was handed down by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
Young, 36, of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara,  admitted to the court that he stole the Route 63 minibus, property of Inderjeet Deosooran, from the driver,  Chetram Shirkissoon on the day in question. Young and the gang, the masterminds of a crime spree in the Number 19 area, had stopped Minibus BMM 5959 and robbed the occupants before ejecting them from the vehicle and driving off. The vehicle, valued at $2 million, was later found abandoned in the East Canje area.
“I heard what the prosecutor said; that is not what happened… I stole the bus, I did not take the people jewels,” Young said in court, having also informed the police that he was a minibus driver.
Young is the main suspect in the $15 million heist from a jewellery store at Rosignol, Berbice. His accomplice Richard Barrow escaped from the Central Police Station the same day he was to be jointly charged with Young for that robbery.  The defendant has two more robbery under arms charges pending.
