Berbice. New Amsterdam’s Mayor and Town Council is seeking assistance to deal with the aftermath of the recent flood which devastated farms and flat houses in Stanleytown.
According to the Mayor several roads will have to be repaired but right now the focus is on the prevention of an outbreak. To this end, the chief citizen says that the council has embarked on an exercise to disinfect affected areas but does not have the required material to effectively carry out the project. However the Mayor noted that the council will not stand with its hands behind its back.
“I want to appeal to persons who have spray material, disinfectant and so on to make a contribution to the town council so that we can have adequate supplies for the entire township and even to help other areas which don’t come under the municipality.” He said following the floods, the council with assistance from the regional administration, and local businessman Tony Ameerlly has started to clear vegetation and other material from the drains in the town.
Work has already commenced on the Republic Road canal, one of the main canals in the town, which is now completely taken over by vegetation.
“Many times when we start to do work there, the machine encounters problems in terms of accessing some parts of the canal, but we will have to deal with it.”
Meanwhile, the road repair will have to wait until the council receives its subvention from central government. Water forces destroyed streets between Number 38 and 47 Stanleytown.
Residents are of the opinion that by the time the town Council is ready to repair those streets, it will be forced to execute major road repairs.
