Medical graduates must explore all employment opportunites

Bridgetown.

The limited number of posts in the public  health sector in a indication that  medical graduates should explore all  avenues for employment, says Minister of Health, Donville Inniss.

"People have to realize that the state cannot be the sole employer and if the state provided  a medical  student with a sound education, the onus is on the student to seek employment opportunities where ever they exist", Inniss said.

He  revealed that there no vacanies for doctors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and predicted  that the situation will be the same in the next 10 years.

"The situation is not like 30 years ago when being a doctor was a rarity to day it is part of the norm. The number of graduates coming out of the University of the West Indies (UWI) medical school here in Barbados, may be more than the number of post availabe in the public sector", Inniss said.

"This challenge has to be addressed on two fronts, expand capacity in the public sector and private sector and see them as an investment , encourage them to go abroad and work, develop their skills and ultimately still make a contribution to Barbados", he added.

Inniss made the comments after he toured the American University of Barbados School of Medicine.
