The St George's University in Grenada is reportedly up for sale. This is one of the largest universities for medical students. Minister of Tertiary Education Fazal Karim said he is unaware of who is the purchaser, but is aware it's being sold, although not officially informed. He expressed his concern about the out-flow of foreign exchange students and the funding they recieve to pursue courses outside of the country.
The news about the sale came just as Cabinet agreed to expand training for doctors, healthcare providers and nurses at a number of institutions as a form of improving human development. But if the news of the sale is true it will put a damper on their plans. He confessed however, the local students can now do their programmes at home.
Teresa Davidson, director of GATE'S funding and grants administration devision, was unable to say exactly how many students were attending the university but knows that GATE funds all the students in St George's who were covered. She said just a small number pay on their own. She confessed the university will be sold as a med school due to the fact that a lot of money was invested in first class medical equipment. The situation is being closely monitored.
