North West District : The police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at Five Star Back Dam, North West District.
A police report stated that miners Trevor Smithet and his brother Cleveland Smithet both of Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, were on their way out of the Backdam in the company of the owner of a mining operation when they were held up by two men armed with firearms.
The men demanded gold and were given a quantity of raw gold. They were apparently not satisfied with that and fatally shot Cleveland Smithet. At this point Trevor Smithet and the dredge owner began to run, and the men discharged rounds hitting Trevor Smithet to his right foot and he fell to the ground.
The men then dealt him several blows about his head and body while the dredge owner is believed to have escaped.
Trevor Smithet has been admitted a patient at the Port Kaituma Hospital.
Investigations are in progress.
