Minimum wage to be addressed – Labour Minister

British Virgin Islands: The law wages being paid to workers, particularly in the hotel industry, continues to be a major concern for people in the BVI, according to a BVInews.com report.

Labour Minister, Dr. Kedrick Pickering, said the Government will be addressing the issue of the minimum wage. He said this issue has been coming up in the labour meetings that are being held across the territory especially on the sister islands. He also added that there are workers in the hotel industry that do not earn anything and there are a number of cases where expatriates are being hired to do jobs and there are qualified persons locally.

The Minister said: “They are not simple labour issues. There are bigger issues than what it seems and one of the bigger issues that ultimately will have to be looked at is the minimum wage – that’s a big issue. We had quite a discussion of that in the Virgin Gorda meeting and the Labour Code does give the Minister the authority to set up different committees. I know the former Minister had started putting a committee in place to look at the minimum wage and that is something we will definitely look at.”

He said some of the issues in the hotel industry are unique and they are part and parcel of bigger labour issues that have to be looked at in a holistic manner and added that the reason for the series of meetings throughout the territory is to have an idea of what the real issues are in the job market, the BVInews.com report stated.
