Georgetown: Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud, is urging mining officers of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) to desist from taking bribes.
He made this remark at the closing of a two -week GGMC workshop where 26 mining officers were trained.
Minister Persaud cautioned that any mining officer found engaging in illegal activities, will face disciplinary actions, including dismissal.
Persaud noted that the ministry has received numerous reports of malpractices by the mining officers, and implored the officers to conduct themselves in a professional manner.
The newly trained officers will be dispatched to mining communities to encourage best practices, and help curb illegal mining in the sector.
