Minister Ganga Persaud calls on strike city workers to return to work

Georgetown : Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Ganga Persaud is urging that the protesting workers of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council return to their work and to observe grievance procedures, even as he called on their unions to ensure that the workers adhere to these measures.

The workers strike yesterday affected the Stabroek and La Penitence Markets. Minister Persaud advised that the workers avoid confrontations, when they are not necessary, as the City is in a bad shape and disruption of the workforce will only compound the situation.

The actions of the workers have denied vendors and citizens access to the markets as they protest a number of issues including non-payment and delay of wages and salary.

“One has to offer appreciation to the current team of Managers at the Municipality and at the same time refer to the non-support that is being placed as a barrier in the path of these managers by the council,” Minister Persaud said.

Minister Persaud also commended the Implementation Committee inclusive of Keith Burrowes and the Solid Waste Collectors, Cevons Waste and Puran Brothers for taking a proactive role in removing the stock pile of garbage across the City.

This group, working along with the Georgetown Mayor and City Council carried out a one-week massive cleanup of the City that started on August 25. A campaign to nab litter bugs is also in force.
