Georgetown : The Honourable Vice President and Minister of Public Security, Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan along with representatives of the Ministry of Public Security met with the Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Mr. Pierre Giroux and a delegation from the Vancouver-based Justice Education Society (JES).
The Justice Education Society (JES) is a Canadian non-profit public legal education organization with over 25 years of experience. Its mission is to build strong communities by promoting the understanding of, access to, and confidence in justice systems both in Canada and internationally.
The purpose of the visit of the delegation to Guyana from September 14 – 18, 2015, is to finalize a two-year “Strengthening the Guyanese Criminal Justice System (SGCJS) Project” which would be implemented by the Justice Education Society with support from the Canadian Government.
The members of the JES team during the visit to Guyana have been programmed to meet with a number of stakeholders to discuss the roll out of the project slated for October 2015.
At the meeting with the Honourable Minister, issues relating to the goals of the project, training methodology, target groups for the training and community awareness activities were discussed by the JES representatives.
The Hon. Minister took the opportunity to inform the representatives from Canada the areas that he would wish to focus on during the two-year training project. The Minister in expressing his appreciation for the project which was initiated by the Government of Canada disclosed that it is timely and fits into the Government’s efforts at improving the investigative capacity of the Police as well as enhancing the prosecutorial skills of the Prosecutors from the Guyana Police Force and the Director of Public Prosecutions’ Chambers.
The Hon. Minister noted that members of the Magistracy will benefit from the two-year project and pledged the full support of his Ministry in ensuring that it is successfully mounted.
