Toco: Food Production Minister Vasant Bharath says the government will make 3,000 acres of arable land available to the public for food production in three months time. The minister was speaking at a farmer’s meeting in Toco when he called on farmers to have more faith in the govenrment.
Relations between farmers and the state have been strained since the bulldozing of farmers lands in April to make way for government housing. Long before that there's always been a level of mistrust..
It's a relationship that the minister says must change. He called on farmers to give the state an opportunity to make farming a lucrative business in this country.
He says his ministry has been working closely with representatives of the agriculture and farming sector as government moves to ensure that food production is prioritised and following the last April's bulldozing of farmers crops Minister Bharath says lands have been identified across the country for farming.
Minister Bharath admits the issue of land tenure is a difficult one to address. He concedes government is partially to blame for that.
He says there are applications that are close to 40 years old that were never approved. As Minister of Food Production he's vowing to clear the backlog and give farmers tenure of lands within 12months.
