The Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, Senator Haynesley Benn has chided Barbadians for living above their means.
Speaking at a meeting of the Barbados Consumers Research Organization Incorporated last night, Benn said that Barbadians must do more to control the cost of living on the island.
While acknowledging that the price of utilities and food has increased in the past year, the Minister said that some Barbadians are spending money as if there was not a recession.
“People complain about the small increase in their road tax and yet they purchase the most expensive accessories for their vehicles. They complain about the cost of living but yet there are still spending money going to expensive shows on weekend, Benn said.
He continued, “I know from my previous job as the marketing manager at one of the largest companies on the island that Barbadians do not like to buy anything that is cheap, on may occasions when we reduced items at my past work-pace some people refused to buy them and the reason given was that the prices were too cheap.”
According to Benn too many Barbadians have become accustom to living a high cost life style and don not wish to cut back.
