Minister says no to fuel subsidy

Bridgetown.

There will be no across the subsidiation of fuel for electricity users in Barbados. This was made clear in the House of Assembly yesterday by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler yesterday.

He made the comments after Opposition parliamentarian Dale Marshall referred to the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) suggestion that the Barbados National Oil Company Limited Group(BNOCL) provide a $35 subsidy for electricity users.

Sinckler said the BNOCL does not have that kind of  and that the  BLP's ill conceived subsidies had almost wrecked the company .

"We will try to find measures as we did in the Budget to relieve some of the pressure but it has to be done in a responsible manner", Sinckler told the House.

"We cannot be reckless with the Barbados economy at this stage. we know have difficcult challenges and we are working to correct those but there is going to be no across the board widespread subsidization of fuel", he added.
