Georgetown : Six new volumes of short stories, selected poetry and poems were this evening added to the list of already published Guyana Classics series published by the Caribbean press under the stewardship of Professor Dr. David Dabydeen. During a simple launching ceremony at the Umana Yana, Kingston, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony credited the hard work of Dr. Dabydeen and team for making the Guyana Classics series a reality.
“Not so long ago a lot of people were skeptical about whether or not a project like this would really come to fruition in Guyana…but because of tenacity and hard work of Professor Dabydeen we now have more than 26 books in the Guyana Classics Series,” Minister Anthony said. The series, the Culture Minister said, has given an excellent overview of Guyana in literary and historic perspectives in various facets.
The collection, he said has given people an opportunity, especially young Guyanese, to have a better understanding of Guyana’s strong literary tradition.
Professor Dabydeen said is not only to publish Guyanese creativity and capabilities but, also the work of other Caribbean writers. The final 10 volumes of books, he said will be published by the end of this year, bringing the project to an end with 36 volumes.
Professor Dabydeen said that work has already begun on putting together another series, using a compilation of speeches by former Presidents of Guyana, including Linden Forbes Burnham, Desmond Hoyte, and Dr Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan. ‘British policy toward the Amerindians in British Guiana’ by Mary Menezes, ‘Unclosed Entrance-Selected Poems’ by Sasenarine Persaud, Selected Poetry by Maggie Harris and by Elly Niland, ‘Short Stories’ by Cryil Dabydeen and ‘An account of the Indians and Chinese immigrants in British Guiana’ by Joseph Beaumont are the new books.
