Georgetown : The Guyana Government is speedily moving to draftof regulations intended to intensify the use of bio- degradable, bio- synthetic materials as an alternative to plastic.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon announced that Cabinet has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Guyana and a Canadian Firm to recycle solid waste.
While he did not name the firm, Dr. Luncheon said it was a top ranking company when it comes to recycling and solid waste and very active worldwide. The company had put forward the best proposal for the Guyana landscape. The recycling activity is expected to take place at the Haag Bosch Sanitary landfill site at the back of Eccles.
Dr. Luncheon added that the Solid Waste Management Act will be tabled in the National Assembly before the end of 2013. The Act seeks to establish a body that will be responsible for overseeing all of the solid waste management functions in Guyana. The body will set out certain standards that waste management companies will have to adhere to along with the protection of the environment during their procedures.
