ST JOHN’S, Antigua : When murder and robbery accused Deon “Ticks” Thomas missed his weekly remand appearance at St John’s Magistrates Court yesterday morning, there was no indication he was literally on his deathbed.
The court was merely informed he was unwell, making it the second time in five months since he was remanded for the February 17 murder of gas station attendant Dorothy Prince.
However, police sources said that shortly after 1 pm yesterday, the Cassada Gardens man died while reportedly receiving treatment at Mount St John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC) for breathing problems.
The 28-year-old’s most recent bout of illness reportedly started a few days prior to his demise. In June he was hospitalised, having complained of stomach problems.
Thomas was one of four men awaiting committal on allegations that he, constable Gideon Jackson of Paynters, ex-soldier Timorie “Diamond” Eilliote of Sutherlands and Omari “Boots” Phillip of Pigotts robbed Dee’s Service Station and killed Prince.
Prince was shot multiple times and succumbed to her injuries a day later, following surgery at the same medical centre where Thomas died.
At about 3:05 pm, Thomas’ body was taken from the hospital in a hearse belonging to Straffie’s Funeral home.Police are investigating the cause of the man’s death.
