Georgetown: The Guyana Trades Union Congress congratulates the National Association of Agriculture, Commercial and Industrial Employees as the union use its first Triennial Conference to review its activities under the Theme” Defending the Rights to Decent Work.” Decent work is a concept developed by the ILO and embraced by the United Nation, the IFIs and major economic and trading blocks. The ILO has described its Decent Work Agenda in this form.
This agenda has to be taken seriously and can be used as the rallying point to organize workers and those exploited in pursuing the goals for a just society. It is against this backdrop the GTUC chooses to describe Decent Work as the greatest aspirations of people in their working lives. It involves opportunities for work that is productive and delivers a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration, freedom for people to express their concerns, organize and participate in the decisions that affect their lives and equality of opportunity and treatment for all women and men.
