Georgetown – The 2012 budget is constitutionally due within 90 days of the commencement of the fiscal year which would lead to the end of March 2012. This is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon speaking to reporters. The minister indicated that Budget 2012 will continue to reflect Government's emphasis on promoting economic growth and social development in Guyana, with ongoing priority given to investment in and physical infrastructure and social services.
In recent years, the Guyanese economy has achieved tremendous growth, with uninterrupted positive growth since 2006, with most sectors of the economy showing bright prospects for the future. It is anticipated that Budget 2012 will lay the foundation for continued growth and development in Guyana.
The APNU appointed Greenidge and Winston Jordan to represent them on the budget consultation committee. In the meantime, the AFC had said that it has prepared a team of financial experts to scrutinise the national budget when it is presented to the House on March 30. That party has indicated its intention to review the budget with a fine tooth comb so as to ensure that the allocations are in the best interest of the citizenry. Issues of job creation, the personal income tax threshold, adjustments to the income tax, and the reduction of VAT are some of the key areas both opposition parties intend to focus on.
