Georgetown: In the town of New Amsterdam, East Berbice Corentyne, Region 6, the Municipality on Sunday advised that non- essential businesses will be closed with immediate effect while others will have to be closed by 18:00hrs in the aftermath of COVID-19.
An elderly woman of New Amsterdam, Region 6, East Berbice Corentyne, who recently returned from the United States of America is suspected to have contracted the disease.
The 78-year-old woman has since been quarantined and four members of her household and three other persons have been isolated, the News Room understands.
The woman left Guyana on March 12 and returned on March 17 after which she fell ill. She was taken to a health facility in Region Six on Friday, March 27 and samples were taken and sent for testing at the National Reference Laboratory in Georgetown. Authorities are awaiting the test results.
Residents of New Amsterdam were issued the following advice:
*All bars, rum shops, beauty parlors , are to be closed immediately.
*Restaurants are allowed to offer delivery services until 4pm .
*The opened supermarkets , owners need to monitor intake, depending on size of customers. New Closure time is 4:30pm
*Pitt street MUST to be closed.. Sanitization of the main shopping area will commence on Tuesday.
*Pharmacies are to be closed at 6pm.
*MARKET will be closed at midday on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday , Friday and Saturday. NOTE Wednesday and Sundays market will be closed.
Only persons selling essential products, such as greens, meat, vegtables are allowed to vend in the market.
All Churches are asked to be CLOSED, until further notice.
The main roads are to be cleared of residents by 7pm.
FISH SHOPS and HANGOUT spots are to be closed COMPLETLY.
The New Amsterdam Municipal BUSINESS Complex will be closed on MONDAY for sanitization .
With respect to pensioners. The monthly outreach at the New Amsterdam Post office on April 1, has been cancelled.
Residents are adviced to build their immune system by eating lots of fruits eg guavas, oranges and other citrus fruits.
Failure to comply with the new guidelines, the Guyana Police Force will be informed, to take necessary action.
