Bridgetown.
Chief Justice Marston Gibson has urged new attorneys to consider practising criminal law before entering any other field.
Speaking before a full sitting in the Number One Supreme Court, attended by family and friends of 30 new lawyers who were being admitted to the Bar, Chief Justice Gibson said there was a huge backlog of pending criminal cases in the system.
"And part of the reason for it is there are few lawyers practising in the field of criminal law"; Gibson said.
He noted there was a time when every new atoroney cut his or her teeth in that field, before moving on to other areas of law.
"That is no longer the case, student already know what areas they will practice in, long before graduation, with the result that our few criminal lawyers are being asked to do what according to the Bible, not even Jesus himself ever did and that is to be in two places at the same time", the Chief Justice said.
